While rifling through our stuff yesterday looking for the Metal Hurlant stuff we posted previously (Ted Benoit and Pierre Clement), we stumbled across some random items we had grabbed years ago in Spain. Grace Jones had just recently wrapped her part in A View to a Kill as May Day, the psychonut bodyguard of Christopher Walken’s Max Zorin. If you haven’t seen the movie, Grace’s over-the-top performance may be worth seeing just to be frightened. We’ll write about Barbara Carrera as Fatima Blush from Never Say Never Again in a future post and may circle back to Famke Janssen’s Xenia Onetopp from Goldeneye at some point too. Sometimes James Bond gets just a bit of too much when he tangles with the wrong sort of girl.
Anyway, on screen Grace Jones plays a dangerous woman that can probably take on anyone in the room and maybe all of them if she can get a hold of some sharp objects. She is very convincing, we might add, given her stature, her piercing eyes, and her sharp features. So, it was particularly funny to flip through an “Hola!” magazine (the Spanish gossip rag equivalent to People but much more interesting) one day and see an article on Grace Jones with the tag line: “The Black Panther: model, singer, and luxurious actress. GRACE JONES: ‘I’m a timid woman.’” What the?! We didn’t bother reading the article. The picture and the tag line were enough for a guffaw. So, here’s your joy for the day.
