It’s 2:30am and we’re sitting at the airport waiting for some friends. Why so late? Because the flight from Frankfurt was delayed and the connecting plane out of JFK was even further delayed because of rain. And to make matters worse, Delta left one of the bags in New York. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the girl whose bag went rogue is diabetic and her shots are in that infernal, mislocated suitcase. So now we’ve got to find a doctor to do an immediate prescription for a quick pharmacy run so we can tide her over until her bag shows up.
So, what does that have to do with anything? Well, it reminds us of an incident from a few years ago that involved S.H.I.E.L.D. After a particularly fierce battle with HYDRA, the Helicarrier was severely damaged and rendered inoperable. It had to be brought down and unfortunately that stranded about 800 S.H.I.E.L.D. agents just north of Chicago. With the threat of an imminent strike against the spy agency’s base in New York, the brass at S.H.I.E.L.D. instructed Nick Fury to get his force back as quickly as possible. HYDRA was already gathering on Long Island and intel indicated that they planned to attack that night. Fury mobilized his people and they descended on Chicago O’Hare International Airport buying out every open seat on any airline going to New York. What he didn’t know was that a small contingency of HYDRA adherents had stayed behind to ward off any attempt by S.H.I.E.L.D. to leave the area. HYDRA’s soldiers broke through airport security and engaged Fury’s agents in the terminals. Needless to say, all the brouhaha suspended air service thereby stranding passengers on planes and at the gates for hours. Some of the fighting took place in the baggage routing center and it took weeks to sort out the whole mess.
The worst of the battle occurred in Terminal 4 and you can still see some of the damage to the ceiling since most of it hasn’t been replaced yet. We swung over there while we waiting for our flight last week.
The next time you’re going through O’Hare stop by the gift shop and ask them for the Nick Fury Ass-Kicker action figure. They are usually in stock but watch out for the price tag. The figures retail for $125.
