Asterix Reviews and Ratings

Rating the Asterix stories

There are many a fond memory of the adventures of Asterix swimming through our minds. Barney is old enough to remember when Asterix and the Great Crossing made its debut. Old Sweater Guy was old enough to remember when Tintin in the Congo made its debut (it’s a surprise that he kept reading Tintin after that tripe). Louise is neither old enough nor young enough to care.

Asterix is the creation by French cartoonists René Goscinny (1926-1977) and Alert Uderzo (b.1927). The first appearances of Asterix was in a french comic periodical called Pilote. Several bankable artists had early career success in Pilote with some eventually founding the seminal Metal Hurlant series later on. But that’s another story.

The Asterix story in Pilote was published in album form in 1961, thus creating a standalone series that would lead to an additional 30+ full length books, movie projects, theme parks, a resurgence in French nationalism, and general hilarity all around. Given that this blog is written by Americans in a vulgar non-King’s English vernacular, we will focus primarily on our experiences with the wonderful world of Asterix without trying to understand any other perspectives, languages, or cultures. This is the American way. We make no apologies.

Let’s begin the reviews.
